| 1. Computer
Awareness for beginners –
8 hours |
A
course to get you started. No pre-knowledge is presumed. You will
have four weeks of 2 hourly lessons on all the basic pointers to
begin using your new computer. Although the course is based on
computers using the XP operating system owners of older machines
will have no difficulty.
Topics
include basic computer management skills, simple writing and printing
skills, creation of files and folders, the use of portable disks, as
well as health and safety issues.

| 2. Email
– 8 hours |
This course is
designed to enable learners to manage and organise their
Email with confidence. It will enable learners to use Email
to prepare, send and receive mail, to send and receive attachments, to
reply and forward, to print Emails and to save them to files, to
organize mail into folders, and to set up and organise address books.
Also to understand the role of an Internet service provider (ISP) and
to link to the Internet.
This
course is recommended after completion of the Computer Awareness
course. |
| 3. Word
Processing Level 1 – 16 hours |
This
course is
intended for learners wishing to develop basic word processing skills
but who already have some basic computer knowledge. It offers the
basic computer skills in using MS
Word
including producing a letter, basic formatting and editing of
documents using the various tools and menus, organising, finding and
manipulating files and folders, saving to disk, printing and
processing with options in formatting and style. Scrolling, cutting,
copying and pasting, moving text about, and using the Help facilities
is all covered. |

Files,
Folders and managing your computer
- 12
hours |

This
course is intended to help learners to manage their computer and the
way in which they store and retrieve files and folders. It includes: How
to look after your files. Saving,
loading and locating files.
Organising your file system. The Directory tree. Searching for lost
files. Practice in creating, copying, moving and deleting files and
folders, use of the right mouse button and keyboard commands.
Customising and
housekeeping
tips. Learn Windows Explorer management skills and how to use the
control panel and its settings. Also learn how to set the screen saver
and desktop, adjust the start menu, use shortcuts, to customize your
tool bars and find your way around Windows
Help. Learners
should already have basic skills in word processing ie. Word
Processing Level 1. A
vital course to halt many frustrations and help you enjoy your
computer better. |
| 5. Introduction to the
Internet
- 8
hours |
| This course is
designed to provide learners with a basic knowledge of the
Internet by using Internet Explorer. Discover the mysteries
of the Internet using Internet Explorer 6.0, understand the role of the
Internet service provider, the importance of security and privacy
issues. Visit Websites using favourite site addresses and Search
Engines. Learn how to download programmes, files and
information, save and print. Understand and check for viruses. A
basic knowledge of word processing to Word Processing Level 1 is
desirable for this course. |
6. Word Processing Level 2
(Intermediate) - 16 hours |
This
course is designed for learners who are familiar with basic word
processing and who would like to use more advanced word processing
functions.
On
successful completion of this course, learners will demonstrate the
ability to enhance documents using advanced techniques including tab
settings, tables, columns, autotext, auto correct, text boxes, headers
and footers, graphics, mail merge, tool bar modification and
multi-page documents. Successful
completion of Word Processing 1 or the equivalent required. |
| 7. Desk
Top Publishing - 16 hours |
This
course is intended to introduce learners to the concepts and skills
required to take advantage of the opportunities presented in the MS
Publisher programme. In addition, learners will be made aware of the
differences between MS Publisher and MS Word.
Discover
the "artist" in yourself to produce brochures, cards,
invitations, newsletters and letterheads, etc
Learn
to use Clip art, Word art, photographs or drawings to enhance your
creations. A
basic
knowledge of
Word
Processing
is desirable for this course and you need to have Microsoft
Publisher software installed. |
| 8. Basics
of Scanning and Image enhancement - 8 hours |
This
course will provide learners with the basic tools to enable them to
begin operating and making use of the scanner as a means of
digitising and manipulating images.
Learn
how to use a scanner to the best advantage by understanding the
settings for the scanning process and using a graphic editor to
enhance or alter your images. |
| 9. Photo
and Image editing using Photoshop Elements 2. -
8 hours |
This
course will introduce learners to digital imagery programmes and some
of the commonly used features to manipulate images. On successful
completion of this course learners will be able to adjust, enhance
and bring new features to digital or scanned images.

| 10. Spreadsheets
- 12 hours |
This
course will introduce learners to workable spreadsheets for home use
in a variety of forms.
A
spreadsheet is an invaluable
tool being the appropriate alternative to word processing where
numbers are involved and where calculations are made simpler. For
example the typing of tables and rosters; the preparation of a home
budget or a simple database such as an address/ phone list; and it
handles easily addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and
calculation printouts.

11.
Database
- 12 hours |
This
course will introduce learners to the uses of simple flat-file
databases for a variety of home-based purposes.
Using
Microsoft Works for Windows learn how to keep records of names and
addresses, inventories, club memberships etc in ways that can be
sorted for mailing lists, searched for particular criteria, and so
on. Learn to use form or list view and applications such as printing
labels, addressing envelopes.

| 12. Power
Point presentations - 16 hours |
Learn
how this powerful tool – part of MS Office suite – can help you
in the home environment. Many business people and educators use this
programme at work but it can enhance your own communications at home.
It basically lets you make up a set of slides containing whatever
you wish, from your favourite photographs to news and information to
send to your friends etc. in the email. The recipient doesn’t need
to have Powerpoint installed but the file will need to have the
viewer bundled with it for them as part of the attachment. Animations,
fly-ins, on screen typing, word-art, fancy backgrounds
are all possible using easy to follow instructions.
Basic
knowledge of Word Processing and file management required. You will
also need your own copy of Power Point installed at home to make your
own presentations. |

Website Development - 12 hours |
This
course will enable learners to build their own website using free
software KompoZer and by writing HTML themselves, the code
that
builds web pages. This will enable
an
understanding of what the code does. You will be
adding photographs, linking web pages, creating layouts,
handle
tables and writing important notes of your own family or
other interests etc. The objective is to have your personal website
published on the Internet. You might have access to a personal
website as part of your ISP agreement for your email or you can use a
"free" web hosting facility. Here’s how to
make use of it.

with animations and music – 4 hours |
This
course is designed to enable learners to add animation and music to
Email messages.
You
will also learn how to download and save animation and music files
from Internet websites.

| 15. Greeting Cards - 8 hours |
This
course is intended to give learners the skills needed to create their
own cards, gift tags, posters, certificates and letterheads using
Microsoft Word. Make
cards that look as though they have come from the shops but are
personalized for your friends – without the need to buy a special
programme to do it with. And learn to make an original and attractive
set of gift tags. Limited only by your imagination

| 16. Creative Art and Craft
- MS Paint – 8 hours |
This
easy to use programme comes with your copy of Windows from Win 95 on.
This is not a course in art work or painting but will make you
familiar with the tools provided. Your artistic ability will come in
to play for the final effects! You can use it for a variety of
useful purposes from Logo construction, Letterheads and business
cards through to making and adapting “screen shots” and making
descendant charts for your genealogy work. The best part is that it
is free!

| 17. Genealogy
- 12 hours |
This course will
introduce learners to genealogy programmes as a means of recording
genealogical data.They
will use the Brother's Keeper windows software programme basically a
filing system to keep records of their own research into their own
families. The Brothers Keeper software can be downloaded from the
Internet or purchased on disk. Brothers Keeper can also be used to
import or export genealogical data communication (GEDCOM) files from
other genealogy programs, add internal notes, or link to text files in
a word processing program, and print out various types of charts and
reports. Basic

| 18. Computer
Workshop – 2 hours |
This
course will introduce learners to a particular topic and deal with it
over a two hour session.
Subjects
will vary but may include material relating to a new facet of computing
technology, revision of known material, or provide
reinforcement of material already introduced in another course.
Examples
are broadband, Internet banking, text messaging, voice over Internet
protocol, photo story, disk management, files and folders, winzip,
digital movie cameras, etc. For more

| 19. Movie making Using Windows Movie Maker – 8 hours |
This
course will teach you how to make movies using video footage and sound
tracks with Windows Movie Maker (available on any computer running
Windows XP or Vista operating systems.) The course is for those who are
familiar with using computers and have completed at least the Computer
Awareness and Files and Folders courses. Equipment needed - video camers with cables and film, headset, DVD-R disk flash drive or CD disk. 20. Mac Courses Two
courses are currently running for Apple Mac users. Getting Started with
Mac OS X.5 is an introductory course for those new to the Mac operating
system; and Mail version 3 is a course explaining the email program on
Macs. Equipment needed - Apple Mac computer. |
