SeniorNet Motueka    Courses for Term 3 2010

The following courses are planned for Term 3. To enrol, contact the tutor by phone or email. Places are limited, so please apply early to be sure of acceptance.  The order of courses is deliberate, and courses 1-5 should be completed before venturing onto more advanced ones later. It can be a good idea to repeat a course to gain more confidence - there is no fee so long as you have the manual.

1    Computer Awareness for Beginners
Tuesdays, 9.30 – 11.30 starting July 20, repeated August 17.    4 weeks   $20
This course is a must for everyone new to computing, and for those wanting to refresh before moving on to other courses. You will learn the parts of a computer and keyboard, writing and printing and basic computer maintenance.

2    Email
Fridays,  12noon – 2 pm, starting August 20.     4 weeks    $20
Learn the basic tools to send and receive emails, including how to handle and file mail, set up an address book and add attachments such as photos.

3    Introduction to Word Processing using Word 2007
Thursdays,  9.30 – 11.30, starting July 22.        4 weeks    $20
An introductory course for those new to word processing. Learn to write in interesting ways by making changes to text such as colour and size, edit documents and insert pictures. Students need to have basic computer understanding and have Microsoft Office 2007 on their computer.

4    Files and Folders
Wednesdays, 2.30 – 4.30, starting August 18.         4 weeks    $20
This course is a must if you wish to take more advanced courses! You will learn how to create, store and retrieve files and folders. Find your way around the Windows system and learn the basic methods to save, name, rename, delete, move and find files. Must have a completed the Beginners Course first.

5    Manage Your Computer with Confidence.
Thursdays , 12noon  - 2pm, starting August 12.    4 weeks    $20
A useful course to take after completing Files and Folders. Gain confidence by being able to customise your computer in a way that suits you. Learn to set the desktop and screensaver, adjust the start menu and taskbar, and set up shortcuts. Familiarize yourself with the Control Panel, and look after and maintain your computer.

6    Using the Paint program
Mondays, 9.30 – 11.30,  on August 16 and 30.    2 weeks    $10
This easy to use program comes with your PC.  This is not a course in art work or painting but will make you familiar with the tools provided.  Your artistic ability will come in to play for the final effects!   You can use it for a variety of useful purposes like logo construction, letterheads and business cards, or making and adapting screen shots, or descendant charts for your genealogy work.

7    Word Processing using Word 2007
Fridays, 9.30 – 11.30, starting July 23.    8 weeks    $40
This word processing course is a more advanced course for those who have done an Introduction to Word, or who have moved from Word 2003 to 2007. Learn to use the ‘ribbon’ interface and ‘office’ button. Choose pre-set styles and templates to produce professional looking documents.

8    Introduction to PowerPoint
Thursdays, 12noon – 2pm, starting July 22.    3 weeks     $15
This short course gets you started on producing a presentation using the Microsoft Office 2007 program, PowerPoint. Learn how to make a professional presentation with photos, text and graphics using different transitions and animations.  Students will need to have basic computing skills including word processing and file management.

Using Photoshop Elements 2, you will become familiar with the tools which allow you to enhance photos, use the right formats, work with graphics, and, at the heart of the program, to understand ‘layers’.  Learn how to restore old photos, and compose new ones.

11    Spreadsheets
Tuesdays, 2.30 – 4.30, starting July 20.    6 weeks    $30
This course will introduce learners to workable spreadsheets for home use. A spreadsheet is an invaluable tool, being the appropriate alternative to word processing, where numbers are involved and calculations are made simpler. For example, the typing of tables and rosters, a home budget or a simple database such as an address or phone list. A basic understanding of word processing and file management is required.

12    Brothers Keeper Database for Genealogy
Tuesdays, 12noon – 2pm, starting July 20.     5 weeks    $25
This course will introduce you to Brothers Keeper, a genealogy program that will help you input and organise your family history information. You can also add notes, link to other text files and print out various charts and reports. A basic understanding of word processing and file management is required.

For enrolment in the above scheduled courses please apply as follows: 

Phone or email the contact tutor and book in.
Make your payment on the first day of the course, preferably by cheque. A receipt will be issued.
Should there be too many applications, (numbers are limited to 4 or 5 per class) you may be placed on a waiting list, or another class may be formed if there are sufficient waiting.
Please have your membership number ready when applying.

If you have a flash-drive memory stick please bring it with you to classes.


Repeat courses

 The short 4 week courses may be repeated during the Term if there is enough interest in them. This includes Computer Awareness and  Email. The dates in the schedule above are for the first time the course is run. If there are enough enrollments another course will follow during the Term.  

If you feel you would benefit from taking a course again to revise skills, there is no fee so long as you still have the course manual and/or CD of notes.
