Course Schedule for Term 1, 2012

Below are the courses for Term 1, 2012. To enroll, contact the tutor by phone or email. Places are limited, so please apply early to be sure of acceptance.  The order of courses is deliberate, and courses 1- 8 should be completed before venturing onto more advanced ones later.  Courses for Mac users are included at the end of the page. Please pay the tutor on the first day of the course.

1    Computer Awareness for Beginners
Tuesdays     9.30 – 11.30 starting 7 February.   4 weeks   $20
This course will help you find your way around a computer. It is a must for everyone new to computing, and for those wanting to refresh before moving on to other courses.

2    Files and Folders
Thursdays    9.30 – 11.30 starting 9 February.         4 weeks    $20
A pre-requisite if you wish to take more advanced courses! You will learn how to create, store and retrieve files and folders. Find your way around the Windows system and learn the basic methods to save, name, rename, delete, move and find files. Must have a completed the Beginners Course first.

3    Email using Windows Live Mail (Windows 7 users)
Tuesdays    12 noon - 2 pm starting 7 February.    4 weeks    $20
This email course is especially for learners who have the Windows 7 operating system and are using Windows Live Mail as their email program.  Learn the basic tools to send and receive emails, including how to handle and file mail, set up an address book and add attachments such as photos.

4    A Guide to Windows 7
Wednesdays    9.30 - 11.30 starting 8 February.     4 weeks    $20
If you have just up-graded your operating system to Windows 7, this course will show you the differences and new features. It is also suitable for those who have purchased a new computer and need help finding their way around.

5    Introduction to Word Processing using Word 2007 / 2010
Tuesdays, 2.30 – 4.30 starting 7 February.        4 weeks    $20
Become more confident when using Word. Learn how to use the formatting tools to make changes to words or paragraphs, use shortcuts to move around a document, become skilled at using cut, copy and paste, set margins, insert tables and photos and lots more. Students must have Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 on their computer.

6    OpenOffice (or LibreOffice)
Thursdays, 2.30 - 4.30 starting 9 February.    4 weeks    $20
OpenOffice is a suite of programs (similar to Microsoft Office) but it is free! It includes word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and database. This course will show you how to use the word processing program so you can write letters, recipes, lists, greeting cards, and much more. If you don’t have OpenOffice installed, you will be shown how to get it.

7    Manage Your Computer with Confidence
Wednesdays, 9.30 - 11.30 starting 7 March.     4 weeks    $20
A useful course to take after completing Files and Folders. Gain confidence by being able to customise your computer in a way that suits you. Learn to set the desktop and screensaver, adjust the start menu and taskbar, and set up shortcuts. Familiarize yourself with the Control Panel, and look after and maintain your computer.

8    Basic Refresher Course
Fridays,    9.30- 11.30       starting 2 March.     2 weeks        $10
A refresher course to go back over some basic computer skills. Suitable for those who have completed the Beginners Course, but still need some help and practice with the basics such as cut, copy and paste; finding and saving files, and simple word processing.

9    Having fun learning to drive along the Internet "superhighway"!
Wednesdays  2.30 - 4.30 starting 7 March.  3 weeks $15
This 3 week course will give you confidence to search the Internet and find what you want. A beginner's introduction to "starting the engine" - finding out about browsers, search engines, basic internet tools & setting up a home page. Then we'll "get into first gear" & learn about the basics of searching, saving favourite websites to folders & downloading images. In the third session we'll "change up the gears" - learn some advanced searching tips & compare different search engines.

10    Using a Digital Camera - the Basics
Tuesdays      2.30 - 4.30 pm, starting 13 March    3 weeks    $15
A basic course for those new to taking photos with a digital camera. Get to know your camera and learn how to take shots, download them onto your computer, make changes with basic editing and then save them where you can find them again! Bring along your digital camera and manual.

11    Playing Around with Photos
Thursdays    9.30 – 11.30 starting 8 March.    5 weeks    $25
Using Photoshop Elements, you will become familiar with the tools that allow you to improve and repair photos, and work with graphic art. Learn how to restore old photos, and compose new ones. Students will need to have basic computing skills including word processing and file management

12    Introduction to PowerPoint
Mondays, 2.30 - 4.30, starting 4 March.    3 weeks     $15
This short course gets you started on producing a presentation using the Microsoft Office 2007/10 program, PowerPoint. Learn how to make an interesting presentation with photos, text and graphics using different transitions and animations.  Students will need to have basic computing skills including word processing and file management.

13    Introduction to Spreadsheets Using Excel 2007/10
Wednesdays, 2.30 – 4.30 starting 8 February.    4 weeks    $20
This course is designed to teach basic spreadsheets and simple databases up to the level that can be used for domestic budgeting or managing the finances of a small club. Whilst the course is based on Excel 2010, learners with their own laptops with 2007 or (Mac) 2008 or 2011 versions will be accommodated. Learners must be conversant with basic word processing functions including Save and Save as, Print and Print Preview and Cut, Copy and Paste.

1    Introduction to Mac OS 10.5

Tuesdays    7pm - 9pm  starting 6 March.  4 weeks          $20
An evening course, to get to know your way around your Mac. You will be introduced to the basics of computing using the Snow Leopard or Lion operating systems, including personalising your computer using system preferences, organising the Dock and using the Internet, email and other programs.

2    iPhoto
Thursdays     12 noon - 2 pm, starting 8 March.    4 weeks    $20
An introduction iPhoto, the photo editing program that comes with your Mac.  Learn how to import and work with your photos, organise them into Albums, detect Faces and edit them using crop, rotate, straighten, enhance and add effects.

Workshops
A number of workshops are being considered and will be held towards the end of the term. They include iPods, Flash Drives, eBooks and eReaders, Ways of Communicating such as Face Book, Skype and Twitter. Let me know if you are interested in other topics as we welcome suggestions for workshops.
